There are many different theories on what may allow this phenomena to happen, from tragic deaths to unfinished business, to fear of judgement, to souls waiting to be reincarnated. The only concensus there really seems to be on human hauntings is that they are human spirits, left in this world after death that seem to be able to interact with the physical world.
